the anti narnia

according to snopes.com (a site that researches , verifies, and denies those claims we all get in our email boxes) regarding the new movie, the golden compass, set to release this holiday season is in fact based on a set of books by an author who says "my books are about killing god".

go here for the whole story.

now having said this, i am not saying that we should picket movie theatres who show this film, or start picket lines and write angry letters to the editor over this. i may still watch it to see what an atheist thinks about god in order to better understand and remind myself that when i speak about my "faith" or "god", that i can be speaking with very intelligent people with their own ideas and preconceived notions- and i need to be clear about the truth.

i pass this on simply because this link has sources for its quotes. one of the worst things we christians can do is start railing against a movie, book, etc. with claims that have no foundation.

so if a co-worker asks if you know anything about this movie, you can say "i know a little bit.." and share what you do know-not what we have heard from a frantic email forward with no support for its claims.

i can't tell you how many people have forwarded me emails about this movie already and how we should not go see it based on the fact that "someone told me" this and then saw that it was "true" on snopes.com. most haven't done any homework on the topic. it reminds me of the "panic" that went around when Lord of the Rings came out and how wizadry was evil (not saying it isn't.)
It's just funny the band wagon people jump on when it suits them.
thank you for challenging us to look into things for ourselves and not just because an email told us to.

I, too, was interested in the Golden Compass because of the movie and all of the negative criticism regarding religion. I suggest that rather than complain or boycott something we don't know about, we should read the book. I read it this weekend and it is a relatively quick and easy read of a similar style to LOTR. Trying to read the book objectively, I actually found it fairly enjoyable and until the last few pages their wasn't anything overtly anti-Christian. Anyway, it won't hurt anyone to read the book and there are certainly opportunities for Christians to use the book/movie to share Christ.

From the article you posted it seems that the future books in the series get worse and I'll probably end my readings of this author with this novel.
